On 25 June 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization & the Luiss Business School release the first-ever World Intangible Investment Highlights, providing new data on investment in intangible assets.

Previously showcased at the first Global INTAN-Invest Conference held on 6-7 May 2024, in Rome, the World Intangible Investment Highlights demonstrate how, in a globalized knowledge economy, intangibles are an increasingly important driver of innovation and economic growth.

The report underlines the pivotal role of investment in intangible assets, such as research and development (R&D), software, data, brands, design, and organizational capital, and provides crucial, up-to-date, harmonized cross-country measures of intangible investment, which are essential for informed policymaking and strategic decision-making.

Although intangibles have a significant economic impact, traditional measurement frameworks have inadequately captured their size, composition and impact. This report aims to bridge significant knowledge gaps, offering comprehensive data which was previously unmeasured or underreported.

The analysis currently covers 26 countries (out of 31 included in Global INTAN-Invest), accounting for more than half of global GDP in 2023, and more economies are planned to be included in future editions.

The first World Intangible Investment Highlights show that, despite multiple crises and increasing interest rates, intangible investment has grown more than three times faster than tangible investment between 2008 and 2023.
